History
Anthropology at ºÚÁÏÍø
Anthropology courses were first taught at California State University, Long Beach in 1952 as part of the Division of Social Sciences. The Department of Anthropology was established circa 1960. Over the decades, our department established its degree programs, including:
- Bachelor of Arts degree (1959),
- Master of Arts degree (1968),
- Minor (1973),
- and the Master of Arts Option in Applied Anthropology (1990).
Our Department has long been deeply engaged not only with our university campus, but with the wider Long Beach community. This engaged work has ranged from ethnographic research on contestations over Puvungna (a sacred site on the edge of ºÚÁÏÍø's campus) to documenting and preserving the history of the Cambodian community in Long Beach. We are proud of faculty and student work that carries this legacy of engagement into the 21st century.
