aNNOUNCEMENT
The UWC is closed during the summer.
We'll be open for Fall 2026 on Monday, August 24!
Welcome!
The University Writing Center is a campus-wide writing support service for all currently enrolled students. We support all students, across all disciplines, and of all class standings. Our goal is to help you become an effective and independent writer.
Consider the UWC as “all things writing.”
We cover all writing tutorial services for our campus community, including:
All Students
This includes students who are undergraduates, graduates, in the credential program, or in other professional certificate programs. If you are a current student, we can help you.
All Colleges
This includes ...
American Language Institute (ALI)
College of the Arts (COTA)
College of Business (COB)
College of Education (CED)
College of Engineering (COE)
College of Health & Human Services (CHHS)
College of Liberal Arts (CLA)
College of Natural Sciences & Mathematics (CNSM)
College of Professional & Continuing Education (CPaCE)
All Majors
We can service all majors on campus with their writing endeavors. In our tutorial sessions, we prioritize high-order concerns in writing, including meta-organization and clarity, development, cohesiveness, audience, and – when applicable – thesis strength.
Another key focus in tutorial sessions is adhering to writing expectations in your field. The “qualities of writing” that a discipline values can vary greatly. It’s our priority to ensure students understand the genre they are writing within.
All Types of Writing
This includes academic writing assignments, personal projects, and any writing-related endeavor you may pursue during your educational journey at .
Academic: We can assist students with various academic assignments, from traditional essays and research papers, to proposals, presentations, thesis and dissertation projects, discussion board posts, professional emails, and more.
Professional: We can assist students with the development of professional materials, including application materials, personal statements, cover letters, resumes, curriculum vitaes (CV), statement of purpose, and more.
Personal: We can assist with any personal writing projects, including column and article development for personal publication, poetry, short story, novel development, other creative writing pursuits, website writing, blogging, social media writing, and more.
Any Stage of Writing
Here, we prioritize the writing “process” over the “product,” meaning that our resource values the time and effort that contribute to the writing process, rather than focusing on a “final” product.
With this mindset, our sessions aim to meet students where they’re at during the writing process. Our tutors can assist with:
Preparation
Prewriting
Brainstorming
Development
Organization
Drafting
Revising
Proofreading
Formatting
& More!
The UWC offers individualized writing instruction (tutoring) to students in one-hour tutorial sessions, hosted by professionally trained peer-tutors. We service both novice and experienced writers at the undergraduate and graduate levels to support students in the development of guided, independent writing skills.
In tutorial sessions, our center offers appointments in a one-on-one format, group sessions, and diverse modalities – including in-person appointments and online appointments (via Zoom).
Beyond tutorial services, the UWC is actively involved in our campus community, including:
Workshops
We host weekly workshops online (via Zoom), featuring select writing-related topics. All students are welcome to register and join workshops.
For more information, please visit our Workshop page.
Outreach
We are avid supporters of students, faculty, and staff.
In our outreach efforts, we offer classroom visits where we share more information about UWC services with students; we visit department meetings to connect with faculty; and we engage with administrators to build an impactful presence on campus.
Events
We attend a wide array of events on campus, from orientations to topic-based events, to campus-wide tabling opportunities.
To review the events we will attend this semester, please visit the Events page.
Partnerships
We value campus partnerships and relationship-building with other resources on campus to help serve the greatest number of students.
Some of our partnerships include our involvement in Beach XP, Bridge to the Beach, the American Language Institute (ALI), #TheBeachWrites, the College of Education Student Resource Center, the College of Business Summer Bootcamp, the McNair Program, and more.
