Linguistics, Translation Studies B.A. + Linguistics M.A.

Students in the Beach EDGE Linguistics (Translation Studies Option) program will complete the requirements for both the B.A. and M.A. in Linguistics. They may double-count up to 9 M.A. units towards both their B.A. and M.A. degrees. See the main Beach EDGE page for more details. 

Double-Counting of Courses

Beach EDGE students in Linguistics may double-count 9 M.A. units towards both their B.A. and M.A. degrees. These 9 units must be completed in residence at ºÚÁÏÍø.

Students can choose up to three graduate-level courses out of LING 533, 540, 580, 595, 596, 610, 620, 625, 650 to double-count.

22 units of Linguistics BA Core required courses

LING/ANTH 170, LING 101, 300, 325, 329, 420, 421

3 units in sociocultural aspects of language. Take one of:

LING 379, LING/ANTH 413, LING 477

15 units of Translation option-specific requirements

TRST 201, 301, 401

3 units of one additional TRST course at the upper-division level, excluding TRST 400, out of:

TRST 410, 435, 451, 452, 465

3 units of Advanced language requirement:

3 units of any course taught in a language other than English at fifth semester level or higher. Note: Other courses, including TRST 400 may also fulfill the advanced language competency requirement, with advisor approval.

9 units of upper-division electives, which may be 500/600-level courses:

Take up to three additional courses (9 units) in Linguistics or translation at the 300 or 400 level. Courses that may be used towards this requirement include all upper-division LING courses except LING 339, all upper-division TRST courses except TRST 400. See Catalog for current list of 300- and 400-level courses.
 
MA-level core courses that double-count towards the B.A. and M.A:

LING 533, 540, 580, 595, 596, 610, 620, 625, 650

After the first four years (up to 3 semesters of Beach EDGE Program participation), Translation Studies Option students will have accumulated 120 units toward their BA. Up to 9 of those units may be MA-level courses that count both toward their BA requirements of 120 units and the MA required units.

One course in research methods (3 units): 

LING 580 or 595 or 596

One course in language and society (3 units): 

LING 533 or 610 or 650

General Linguistics Option Requirement

  • (3 units)

18 additional units, including electives and culminating experience (Project or Thesis)

Eligibility & Admissions

A student can only apply if they:

  • Are a matriculated undergraduate student at ºÚÁÏÍø
  • Have taken 60 units (completed or in progress)
  • Have taken 12 upper-division LING units (completed or in progress)
  • Have completed at least one of LING 325 Modern English Grammar or LING 420 Phonology or LING 421 Syntax with a grade of ‘A’ or ‘B’
  • Have a ºÚÁÏÍø GPA of 3.0 or higher

Students must submit:

  •  (including personal statement)
  • Unofficial transcripts from all institutions attended
  • Writing sample - an academic paper (does not have to be on linguistics)
  • 2 names of ºÚÁÏÍø Linguistics faculty recommenders, optional third recommender of the student’s choice (who could be outside ºÚÁÏÍø). Recommenders will be sent an evaluation form by the department.
