What is the Beach Institute for Dialogue and Community?

The BIDC is a campus entity that aims through its programming to create opportunities for dialogue about topics that are important to the community and its members, in ways that promote understanding, empathy, and curiosity. 

Led by three senior faculty members and supported by the president and full executive cabinet, the Institute functions as an independent and interdisciplinary academic unit dedicated to civic thought.

The purpose of the Beach Institute for Dialogue and Community at ºÚÁÏÍø is to cultivate an environment where diverse identities and ideologies can engage constructively, promoting empathy, respectful disagreement, mutual understanding, and peaceful coexistence to support the university’s dedication to teaching, research, and service. The Beach Institute aims to address the challenges of identity attacks and misinformation by fostering a culture of pluralism that enhances the university's core mission areas and serves the Greater Long Beach community.

The mission of the Beach Institute is to foster intellectual and social engagement across diverse identities and ideologies, advancing justice, inclusion, and cooperation, providing structured opportunities for dialogue and collaboration among the university community, and embedding pluralism principles in the curriculum and institutional practices of the University and broader community.
