Program Description

The Environmental Science & Policy (ES&P) program at ºÚÁÏÍø is jointly administered by the College of Liberal Arts and the College of Natural Sciences & Mathematics, reflecting its inherently interdisciplinary mission.

Whether through the Bachelor of Science (B.S.), Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) or minor track; ES&P students build a rigorous foundation in both the natural and social sciences. Graduates are prepared for careers or graduate study where they can design, evaluate, and implement policies and solutions at the intersection of human and ecological systems.

What you will Learn:

  • Interdisciplinary integration: You will develop a strong grounding in biology, chemistry, earth/atmospheric science, economics, geography, political science, and policy analysis.
  • Systems thinking: The curriculum emphasizes understanding how human, physical, and biological systems co-evolve and influence each other.
  • Policy design & evaluation: Coursework examines how to intervene in environmental systems by evaluating risks, costs and benefits, ethical trade-offs, regulatory tools, uncertainty, and stakeholder values.
  • Technical and quantitative skills: Students engage with GIS, remote sensing, modeling, statistics, environmental monitoring, and data analysis as part of their training.
  • Capstone & applied experience: All majors complete a capstone project (ES P 400) in which they conduct original, integrative research or policy analysis. Internships, directed studies, and community engagement are encouraged.
