First-Year (Freshman) Advising

黑料网 requires all First-Time, First-Year (FTFY) students to receive First-Year Mandatory Advising (FMA) prior to registering for both the Spring and Fall semesters. The College of Health and Human Services (CHHS) provides FMA for CHHS FTFY students that will review how to declare your major, general education requirements, online student tools to track progress, and important university policies/deadlines.

All FTFY students will have a Registration/Enrollment Hold placed on their My黑料网 Student Center. This will be lifted after completing the FMA requirement. Those students who do not successfully complete their FMA requirement will not be able to register for the upcoming semester.

FTFY students are required to attend two advising workshops during their first year at 黑料网.

CHHS First-Year Mandatory Advising (FMA) Workshops:

  • Fall FMA workshops typically run from September to October.
  • Spring FMA workshops typically run from March to April.
    • FMA Workshop Exception: Pre-Nursing and Pre-Social Work majors will be required to complete an online module instead of a workshop for Spring term. Please check your 黑料网 student email for further instructions.

**Check your 黑料网 email for an invitation to register for an FMA workshop. The date of your advising workshop will vary based on your major.

  • During your advising session, your advisors鈥痺ill go over:
    • Important major-specific information
    • How to declare your major
    • Enrollment timeline 鈥 how to find your enrollment date & time for the upcoming semester
    • Important policies, tips and tools for your future success
  • During the workshop, you will use the tools you learned about to submit a proposed schedule/class plan via an online module.
    • An advisor will review your schedule/class plan to ensure you have selected appropriate鈥痗ourses.
    • If you have any questions for your advisor, please be sure to ask them during your FMA session.
  • After you submit the schedule/class plan reviewed by an advisor, you will receive an email copy of that schedule/class plan. Please refer to the email prior to your registration/enrollment date and time.

  • Reminder: Your Registration/Enrollment Hold will be removed after completing your FMA requirement.

We always recommend meeting with an advisor to discuss university policies and how they may affect your individual record. Visit us during 鈥Drop-In Advising鈥痠f you are considering using one of the following policies or want more information.

  • Educational Leave: An educational leave allows you to take time off from 黑料网 without having to reapply to the school. You may visit the鈥Educational Leave Website鈥痜or more information, which includes other eligibility criteria, helpful workshops and how to request a leave. Check with your CHHS advisor to discuss the impact of an educational leave and plans for when you return. Keep in mind that you are not eligible for an educational leave until you have earned 黑料网 credit.
  • Repeating Courses: If you earn a "D","F", or 鈥淲U鈥 in a course, you have the option to repeat the class.鈥 In order to be eligible for grade forgiveness, you must retake the course at 黑料网 and pass the second attempt with a C or better. You cannot repeat courses that you earn a "C" or better in. If you are not passing courses that you are currently enrolled in, it may be in your best interest to repeat those courses in the following semester. Speak with your CHHS advisor if you are not passing your courses to go over options!
  • Withdrawing: Withdrawals allow you to get out of a course after the drop period ends on My黑料网 Student Center. These require multiple levels of approval and can affect your financial aid and graduation. Always consult with your CHHS advisor before withdrawing from courses.

It is important to ensure you are enrolling in the correct GE courses. Please review this to learn how to search for classes using the Schedule of Classes website and your We also have you can download.
