Dr. Skyler Morgan (he/him) is an assistant professor in the School of Criminology, Criminal Justice, and Emergency Management at California State University, Long Beach. He earned his Ph.D. in Criminology and Criminal Justice from Arizona State University in 2023.
A queer criminologist, Dr. Morgan’s research explores queer turning points: developmental life events that shape the life-course trajectories of LGBTQ+ people. Specifically, he examines how these turning points influence pathways into and out of the criminal legal system. He is currently leading a typology project on chosen families in Los Angeles, which seeks to deepen understanding of how these distinct relationships function as sources of support, resilience, and desistance. His work is primarily qualitative and grounded in a commitment to centering and uplifting LGBTQ+ voices too often marginalized in academia and beyond.
Dr. Morgan’s scholarship appears in leading peer-reviewed journals, including Criminology, Journal of Criminal Justice, Critical Criminology, Victims & Offenders, and the Journal of Developmental and Life-Course Criminology. His recent research on the coming out process among formerly incarcerated LGBTQ+ people received the 2025 Outstanding Scholarly Contribution of the Year Award from the Division on Queer Criminology.
He is also a dedicated teacher and mentor. At CSU-LB, he has taught classes on Corrections (CRJU 303), Queer Criminology (CRJU 428), and Crime and Inequality (CJRU 402). Dr. Morgan is also the faculty advisor for the ºÚÁÏÍø chapter of Alpha Phi Sigma Criminal Justice Honor Society. Outside of academia, he enjoys strategic board games, reality competition shows, thrifting, spending time at local coffee shops, and traveling.
