Nick Johnson
Nick is a lifelong musician, bassist, and multi-instrumentalist, and obtained a Bachelor of Music in Classical Double Bass Performance with a minor in Jazz Studies from Christopher Newport University in his hometown of Newport News, VA - notably performing with Grammy-winning jazz vocalists Ann Hampton-Calloway and Kurt Elling. He has also been active in theatre since high school, either as a musician or a sound tech. Previous credits include The Music Man, South Pacific, Little Shop of Horrors, The Last Five Years, The Drowsy Chaperone, and Every Brilliant Thing. After becoming interested in audio recording and production late in his undergraduate years, he moved to New York City to begin his studies toward a Master of Music in Music Technology from New York University. While also in the Big Apple, he worked as an audio technician and engineer for Resorts World Casino New York City, and worked with well-known artists, celebrities, and networks such as The Commodores, Kool n’ The Gang, Maxine Nightingale, Gloria Gaynor, Coolio, Lil’ Kim, Mike Tyson, 50 Cent, Fuel, Mike Score, Fred Thomas, Taylor Dane, Eddie Money, Tony Orlando, Harold Melvin and The Blue Notes, Fats Domino, Color Me Badd, CBS Sports, ESPN Radio, NY FOX 5, and others. Wanting a change of pace, Nick moved to southern California in 2018, and began working at both the Brea Improv comedy club as an audio engineer for many acclaimed stand-up comics, and in Golden West College’s Theatre Arts department in Huntington Beach as Box Office Supervisor and Sound Designer. His first show with CSU Long Beach’s Theatre Arts department was as a designer on Ride The Cyclone in spring 2024. Nick is thrilled to be on the department staff, while having the continued opportunity to design, to mentor students interested in the world of sound design, and to keep the flow of tickets to our theatre patrons running smoothly. When he isn’t in rehearsal, running a show, working with finances, or clearing that ticket stock printer jam again, Nick is an avid video and tabletop gamer, records covers and original songs for his YouTube channel, performs in rock and metal (and sometimes folk) bands, is finding some new recipe to cook while his 3D printers are working away, maybe perfecting his French macaron baking technique, or out running.
