Credential Requirements

Summary of Credential Requirements 

As per the Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC), the PK-3 Early Childhood Education Specialist Instruction Credential requires the applicant to have completed all of the following requirements:

  1. Possession of a bachelor's degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution of higher education.
  2. Completion of the subject matter requirement.
  3. Completion of a Commission approved PK-3 ECE Specialist Instruction Credential preparation program.
  4. Passage of Commission approved Teaching Performance Assessment.
  5. Passage of the Foundations in Literacy or a Commission approved literacy assessment aligned with the requirements of Education Code section 44320.3.
  6. Section 44335 of the California Education Code requires all candidates for the PK-3 Early Childhood Education Specialist Credential to demonstrate knowledge about the United States Constitution. This requirement must be completed before the credential is recommended. The U.S. Constitution requirement can be fulfilled by satisfactory completion of one of the following:
    1. Graduation from a college or university within the California State University system.
    2. Completion of a course on the provisions and principles of the U.S. Constitution taken at a regionally accredited community college, or a four-year college, or university.
      1. At ºÚÁÏÍø, candidates may take either Political Science 100, or Political Science 391
      2. Verify a course taken at another college or university meets the requirement by contacting the CED Student Success & Advising Center in EED-18, 562-985-1105, or email ced-credentials@csulb.edu. Provide  an official transcript showing completion of the course and a copy of the course description.
    3. Pass an examination on the Provisions and Principles of the U.S. Constitution offered by a regionally accredited college or university.
