Faculty and Research Infrastructure
Faculty mentorship is essential to student success because of its long-lasting impact on their professional development. The BUILD Student Training Programs are supported by over 120 faculty BUILD faculty mentors from four participating colleges: Engineering (COE), Health and Human Services (CHHS), Liberal Arts (CLA), and Natural Sciences and Mathematics (CNSM). During the 11-year period, over 80 faculty members have served as research mentors to our trainees. In addition to supporting faculty-mentored student research activities, BUILD implemented several mechanisms to enhance faculty’s professional development and research capacity. Among these efforts are mentor training programs, Pilot Grants, Research Stimulation Grants, Collaborative Research Stimulation Grants, Mid-size Equipment Awards, Small Equipment and Computers Awards. Thirty-two faculty members received the Research and Collaborative Research Stimulation Awards, which resulted in 27 extramural grant proposal submissions with 15 successful outcomes. These award mechanisms enabled faculty to involve nearly 200 undergraduates in their research projects that led to over 150 presentations and 40 publications. In addition, over 50 Mid-Size and Small Equipment Awards were given to faculty, with funding from BUILD Phase I used toward purchases of major equipment (Projet 6000HD Stereolithography 3D printer (COE) and Sony Cell Sorter SH800 (CNSM)) and upgrading research facilities (Behavioral Research And Instruction in Neurosciences Lab (CLA) and Interdisciplinary Health Research Laboratory (CHHS)).
