Halfway through the decade, let’s take a look back at some of the highlights of what Beach 2030 has accomplished so far.

Beach 2030 strategic plan announced
During her annual convocation address, President Conoley announces the formal launch of Beach 2030. The initiative will start with a two-year process to gather input from the community, which will be used to form the 10-year strategic plan.


Two-day Imagine Beach 2030 event takes place
The campus and community come together online for two days to suggest ideas on how the university can better prepare for the future and in which areas. A total of 24,300 topics are shared on via on online platform and range from free tuition to improved technology to sustainability to interdisciplinary majors and increased parking.


COVID crisis tests our resilience as plan set to launch
Just as the 10-year strategic plan is slated to roll out, the COVID-19 pandemic causes global turmoil and tests our resilience and abilities to adapt to an uncertain future.


Beach 2030 plan launches publicly
Beach 2030, ºÚÁÏ꿉۪s ambitious strategic plan, launches after years of intense planning. Teams of ºÚÁÏÍø staff and faculty assemble around seven Action Plans. Many projects are already underway by teams dedicated to helping The Beach achieve its Beach 2030 vision.


AVP of Future Planning & Communications Specialist are hired
As we begin to emerge from the pandemic, two new positions are hired to support the Beach 2030 strategic initiative: An Assistant Vice President of Future Planning and a Communications Specialist.

Future-Ready University: Foresight workshops
ºÚÁÏÍø leverages partnership with Institute for the Future to train Beach 2030 leaders on Foresight tools, with the goal of developing a foresight toolkit made custom for The Beach. CLA, CED, COE and Student Affairs are trained in foresight to reimagine operations.

Reimagine Staff: Staff Wellness Inventory
The recently launched Beach Wellness Inventory is developed. A growing repository of health and wellness resources for faculty and staff, the Inventory represents a great stride in ºÚÁÏ꿉۪s effort to Design a Culture of Collaboration and Community.


Reimagine Staff: Staff Professional Development Fund rolls out
A centralized fund dedicated to supporting staff professional development launches campus-wide.

Build a Growth Strategy: Credit for Prior Learning policy launches
These new standards allow students enrolled in ºÚÁÏÍø to earn credits toward a degree or other area of study for their life or work experience.

Engineering- and Health-related degree pathways engage students
In conjunction with the College of Health & Human Services (CHHS), Long Beach Community College, and Long Beach Unified School District, the College of Engineering (COE) strengthens outreach, dual enrollment, Beach XP enrollment, and paid-internship infrastructure through a new $2.5 million, k-16 collaborative grant.

Future-Ready: Teams Voice connects campus remotely
A campus-wide phased rollout of Microsoft Teams Voice Calling begins, allowing users to seamlessly make and receive telephone calls on their computers and mobile devices using the familiar Teams platform



Student-Ready University: Beach XP welcomes first-year students in new learning community model
ºÚÁÏÍø launches Beach XP, a brand new learning community program for first-time, first- year students.

Reimagine Faculty: Faculty Appointment Guide publishes
Beach 2030’s Reimagine Faculty team publishes a new Faculty Appointment Guide, introducing three new, highly desired faculty titles: Professor of Practice, Artist in Residence, and Clinical Professor. These titles aim to open new pathways for instructors with industry experience to be formally recognized in the academy for their service.

College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics expands student & employee engagement in learning opportunities
Through CNSM’s Keck Undergraduate Research Experiences (KURE) and ASCENDxTHRIVE programs, new learning and research opportunities are offered to students and instructors.

Early Childhood Education Gets Boost
The Ballmer Scholar Program for Early Childhood Educators will provide scholarships and services to early childhood educators in the College of Education seeking California teaching credentials to meet the demand for Pre-Kindergarten teachers.

Division of IT pioneers new ways to expand access to digital spaces
New virtual assistant kiosks, interactive maps and chatbots, and remote work technologies are shepherded by the Division of IT to ensure ºÚÁÏÍø is cultivating resilience in an ever-changing technological landscape.


Events build community through art
The College of the Arts leads events that exemplify what it means to build community. For example, during the first ever Abstraction Symposium, an event in spring 2023, scholars, artists, and students to came together for in-depth discussions on abstraction in contemporary art today. The symposium gave students opportunities to present their research alongside innovative contemporary artists in an accessible forum during events that were free of charge for the public.


ºÚÁÏÍø reaches $275 million No Barriers campaign
Through its No Barriers campaign, which launched in 2022, the university has secured donations from individuals, corporations and foundations clustered around three priorities: student empowerment, workforce development and strengthening programs for the community.

Growth Strategy: Beach EDGE launches​
Beach EDGE creates an expedited and seamless pathway to a graduate degree, merging related undergraduate and graduate coursework for a 4+1 program.​

College of Business expands advising and tutoring space
Focusing on advising, outreach and learning support, the College of Business (COB) Center for Student Success (CSS) opens its renovated and expanded space in November 2024.​

Build and Equitable and Empowering Culture: Equity Rubric and Assessment tool developed
To support future Beach 2030 goals, initiatives, and programs, the team focused on Building an Equitable and Empowering Culture develops a rubric and planning tool designed to help incorporate an equity minded approach in these initiatives.

Reimagine Staff: Future of Work initiative begins
After months of planning, research and analysis, Beach 2030 launches the Future of Work initiative, exploring how our institution can best adapt its services to meet the desires and expectations of our workforce while serving students and supporting their changing needs.​

Reimagine Faculty: Reappointment, Tenure, and Promotion policy marks great stride for faculty
Beach 2030's Reimagine Faculty action zone team facilitates the revision of ºÚÁÏ꿉۪s policy governing faculty reappointment, tenure, and promotion. Examining this policy and its standards for faculty review was identified as a meaningful project during the Beach 2030 planning process to allow greater autonomy for ºÚÁÏÍø scholars.

Student Affairs launches Day 1 Textbook Access program
The D1TA program offers students online access to all their course texts each semester for one flat rate. 

Advance Partnerships: Partnership Database makes gains
The new director of university partnerships and civic engagement steers a campus-wide project to develop a centralized database of partnerships across ºÚÁÏÍø. This initiative will help us leverage new opportunities to engage with strategic partners.

Supporting annual growth in health and human services
Aligned with the CHHS strategic plan and Beach 2030 goals, this new model for collaboration will support the annual growth of professional and continuing education program enrollment in CHHS across four programmatic divisions within the college: Lifelong Learning, Professional Education, Degree Access, and Global Enterprise.

ºÚÁÏÍø launches the Beach Staff Development Center, a new one-stop- shop bringing opportunities for career advancement, partnerships, and staff engagement all under one roof.

Accelerating Impact: Expanding the Beach 2030 Project Portfolio
At the midpoint of the Beach 2030 strategic plan, sixteen new projects have been approved, each aligned with the university’s five strategic priorities: engaging all students, expanding access, promoting intellectual achievement, building community, and cultivating resilience. These efforts reflect the creativity of our campus community and build on the momentum of the plan’s first five years, positioning ºÚÁÏÍø to lead with innovation and prepare students for success.

Expanding Opportunity: The Long Beach College Promise Beach 2030 Collaborative
ºÚÁÏÍø is deepening its commitment to student success through the Long Beach College Promise Beach 2030 Collaborative, a cross-sector effort that supports Promise students from middle school through college and into the workforce. By partnering with schools, families, and community organizations, the initiative addresses barriers such as low income, first-generation status, and underrepresentation to create a more inclusive pathway to higher education.

Library certificate program offers online courses for instruction, teaching
With support from the , the University Library is currently designing a certificate in Library Instruction and Teaching that developed out the exploratory research led by library faculty and senior leadership. 

Advancing Access: The BMAC Peer Ambassador Program
As part of ºÚÁÏ꿉۪s journey toward a more inclusive, future-ready campus, the Bob Murphy Access Center (BMAC) is launching the Peer Ambassador Program. Designed to elevate the voices of students with disabilities, the program invests in student leadership, equity, and accessibility through peer mentorship, outreach, and advocacy.
Ambassadors will support newly registered BMAC students in navigating campus life, understanding accommodations, and building confidence in self-advocacy—while also gaining skills in public speaking, disability law, and communication. The initiative not only strengthens student success but also fosters a culture of inclusion that advances Beach 2030’s vision for the future.

Beach 2030 at the Halfway Mark: A New Strategic Home
Halfway through the decade, oversight of Beach 2030 transitions to the Office of the President. Building on the many accomplishments achieved so far, this shift reflects the initiative’s continued growth and creates new opportunities for collaboration across campus. Leaders will be reevaluating priorities and exploring what lies ahead for the next phase of projects, ensuring Beach 2030 remains a bold, innovative force in shaping the future of The Beach.

Enhancing Connection: The Student Communications Improvement Project
To better serve students, the Student Ready Action Zone is improving campus communications through two major initiatives. An external analysis will guide the development of a student-centered communication plan that streamlines messaging, integrates feedback, and leverages data for clarity and impact. At the same time, ºÚÁÏÍø will launch a new mobile app to provide real-time, two-way communication between students and the university. Together, these efforts will create a more connected, responsive campus experience tailored to student needs.

The Future of Work: Building Services, Beach 2030 Launch New Process for Strategizing Space
As part of a multi-faceted project to reimagine the future of work, ºÚÁÏ꿉۪s Beach Building Services teamed up with Beach 2030 to develop The Future of the Office: Best Practices and Space Standards — a guide to help ºÚÁÏÍø think strategically about physical space on campus. With easy-to-follow steps and practical tools to help implement space changes, this new project aims to be a resource for creating innovative, collaborative and productive workspaces in a hybrid environment.

Investing in Success: The ºÚÁÏÍø Financial Education Initiative
ºÚÁÏÍø is expanding the Financial Education Initiative to strengthen student financial literacy and readiness for life after graduation. With an emphasis on equity and career preparedness, the program equips students—especially first-generation and low-income—with essential money management skills to support long-term stability and mobility.
