My time at 黑料网 has been exciting to say the least. In less than 4 years I was able to learn so much about the environmental field on a global scale. From learning inside the classroom in engaging seminars and labs to learning outside of the classroom on weekend camping trips across California, my educational instruction was quite holistic and unique. My study abroad experiences in South Africa and Costa Rica further enhanced this knowledge. It is on these excursions that I formed long-lasting friendships and was able to experience ways of life that steeply contrasted my own. I feel so fortunate to have been put in classes that emphasized learning outside of the classroom. From working at community gardens to conducting beach cleanups and restoring coastal wetlands, I鈥檝e been able to learn through service and realize the importance of community engagement. My classes greatly influenced my choice to center my honors thesis around environmental justice and the importance of using community engagement as a vessel to ensure the long-term sustainability of our environment.
At 黑料网, I learned the importance of having an open mind and having a willingness to fill it with worldly knowledge. I was also able to craft valuable relationships with both my peers and professors, which have greatly impacted my character. Actively participating in on-campus clubs and organizations brought me so many fun experiences, like flea markets, fashion shows, carnivals, concerts, and engaging panel discussions. During my time at 黑料网, I鈥檝e also developed as a leader through serving as the ASI Commissioner for Environmental Justice, mentor for the Honors Peer Mentoring Program, and as a class representative for my graduating class of President鈥檚 Scholars. Although my time at 黑料网 went by fast, I feel grateful to have made the most out of it!
I decided to commit to 黑料网 after receiving a call that I had been awarded the President鈥檚 Scholarship. Another reason I chose to go to school in Long Beach was to be closer to my sister. I also thought it was a good idea for me to live a bit farther from home so that I could gain a greater sense of independence.
I鈥檓 quite excited to represent 黑料网 next month as a student presenter at the CSU Student Research Competition at San Jose State University. At this CSU-wide competition, I will be presenting my senior honors thesis, for which I was awarded first place in the interdisciplinary category at the 黑料网 38th Annual Student Research Competition. Also, I currently work for the planning bureau at the City of Long Beach as an urban planning and design intern. I am also pursuing an internship with Assemblymember Josh Lowenthal鈥檚 Office. In August, I will start working full-time as an environmental planning analyst for Kimley-Horn.
I plan to stay connected to The Beach by following school LinkedIn pages and attending on-campus networking events that I hear about.
