Faculty & Staff Sustainability Leadership Award

Are you inspired by a colleague’s commitment to sustainability? 

Or proud of your own efforts to make a difference? We’re inviting faculty and staff to for outstanding sustainability achievements.

Faculty will be recognized for sustainability achievements in teaching, research, service, and leadership. Staff will be recognized for sustainability efforts in student engagement, collaboration, leadership, and impact to campus.

Current lecturers and tenure-line faculty are eligible for the Faculty Sustainability Leadership Award. 

Current state-side and auxiliary staff are eligible for the Staff Sustainability Leadership Award. 

Self-nominations or nominations by a faculty, staff, or community members on behalf of a nominee are welcome.  

Nominations will be received via an . A written statement (500 words max) describing the nominee’s leadership activities and qualities as specified below, including how their efforts align with the core mission of the President's Commission on Sustainability

Criteria

Please describe how the faculty nominee's activities related to sustainability and environmental justice demonstrate excellence related to at least two of the following four criteria: 

  • Teaching - The nominee demonstrates excellence in teaching by bring sustainability and/or environmental justice into teaching and instructionally related activities. Examples may include, but are not limited to, creative or innovative teaching approaches, class projects, or curriculum design, and note any professional development done to support this work.

  • Research, Scholarly and Creative Activity - The nominee demonstrates excellence in research, scholarly, and/or creative activity that focuses on sustainability and/or environmental justice. Share what makes the work innovative or unique, and explain how it makes a difference (i.e., new knowledge, creative expression, or real-world impact).

  • Service - The nominee demonstrates excellence in service to the department, college, university, broader community, and/or through student mentorship that advances sustainability and/or environmental justice. Include contributions, outcomes, impacts, and innovative approaches to collaboration or community engagement.

  • Leadership - The nominee demonstrates excellence in leadership that inspires or guides others toward advancing sustainability and/or environmental justice on or off campus. This might include, but is not limited to, building collaborations across disciplines, leading departmental, college or university efforts, empowering students or faculty, or leading projects that made measurable change.

Criteria

Please describe how the staff nominee's activities related to sustainability and environmental justice demonstrate excellence related to at least two of the following four criteria: 

  • Impact on campus/department - The nominee demonstrates excellence in supporting sustainability and/or environmental justice within their unit/department or across campus. Share how efforts have made a difference within the nominee's unit/department or across the university, and give specific examples of results and/or measurable outcomes.

  • Student Engagement - The nominee demonstrates excellence in student engagement that promote or advance sustainability and/or environmental justice. Describe efforts that provide students with meaningful opportunities to learn about and participate in sustainable practices and/or environmental justice.

  • Collaboration - The nominee demonstrates excellence in building partnerships to advance sustainability and/or environmental justice initiatives. Please describe how the nominee has worked across campus units or with community partners, and highlight any collaborations that have promoted environmental stewardship and justice.

  • Leadership -The nominee demonstrates excellence in showing leadership within their unit or department to advance sustainability and/or environmental justice, beyond the expectations of their formal position. Please include examples of programs, policies, or practices, which advance sustainability and/or environmental justice, that the nominee has developed or helped move forward.

All submitters will have the option to submit additional materials to support their nomination. Examples of supporting materials may include:  

  • Links to webpages highlighting leadership efforts
  • Articles or published works
  • A short abstract or case study describing relevant past or current projects or research
  • Photos documenting leadership activities
  • Certificates of achievement or award
  • Correspondences/letters of recommendation
  • Media (videos, flyers, educational materials, etc.) related to relevant events or initiatives
  • Testimonial(s) from those who can attest to the nominee's leadership and involvement in sustainability and/or environmental justice efforts.

These materials are not required but are encouraged.  

A committee made up of PCS Commissioners and Network Members will review all applications and select the winners. 

The faculty and staff members award winners will be recognized at the Sustainability Leaders Appreciation Event on October 23rd from 4:30 - 6:30pm and will receive: 

Certificate of award 

  • Plaque/Award

  • Letter of distinction from the President’s Commission on Sustainability 

  • Feature on the Beach Sustainability website
