The life of Bob Maxson, the president of Cal State Long Beach from 1994 to 2006, was memorialized in a column by Rich Archbold of the . Archbold wrote that Maxson began his career as a high school English teacher before receiving his doctorate and going into higher education, where he spent 28 years as a university president, serving at the University of Houston-Victoria, the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and Cal State Long Beach. Maxson passed away on Sept. 22 at his home in Anacortes in the San Juan Islands near Seattle, Washington.
