Long Beach State University jazz trumpeter Cade Gotthardt was among 11 collegians awarded with the Yamaha Young Performing Artists award this year.

“I was totally surprised,” Gotthardt told the . “I applied to it and knew it was a big deal. People who have won in the past are big names, but I didn’t think I had a chance.”
