2025 Mixing With Colors: METRIC's First Art Workshop

Published October 29, 2025

The inaugural Mixing With Colors Workshop took place on October 27, 2025, offering students and faculty a welcome opportunity to relax and recharge during midterm season. A total of six participants attended, including five current METRIC scholars and one program staff member.

The idea for the workshop originated with CECS Mentor Dr. Jelena Trajkovic, who was inspired by her own transformative experience in painting classes. After sharing one of her own artworks, CECS scholars suggested hosting a group painting session as a creative way to unwind. With enthusiastic support from scholar co-organizers Mark Mendez and Melanie Cativo, the first-ever METRIC Art Workshop at Long Beach came to life.

Open to anyone with even a hint of curiosity about painting—or simply a need for a break—the workshop encouraged participants to experiment with primary colors and create personalized color wheels under the guidance of Dr. Trajkovic and Mendez. The event provided a meaningful space for the METRIC community to connect, express creativity, and explore the calming power of art together.
